As a medical typist for mental health all I hear about is the drug cooking/trafficking/abuse, the poverty, the domestic violence, violent crimes and etc. in the area. I know some pockets of the city are worse than others, but the nicer parts are quite pricey and further from work than I'd like to travel if I were to move

I remembered working in Brussels, and living in Neerpelt. It took me 2hrs (train, one change) one way to get to work, and most of the times 3hrs to go back. (missed connection)
Frankly, it never bothered me to do that. Moving? Houses are TOO expensive (thank you EU!
3hrs (one way) was a bit over the top, so we moved to Charleroi. (I worked in Namur)

Yeah, driving is fun, quick and comfortable for everyone, except the one who actually drives the car.
Then again, going by train means more carrying heavy stuff or not bringing as much drinks as you would with a car.
Did both. I even took a rental to Wacken once.
I think I would go with the car option.
