I was thinking, going to Eindhoven, but that'd be a detour for her. (from Heerlen to Genk is easier through Sittard/Maastricht)

Point is, you're leaving the country quicker than you think, meaning, everything different including the language. It's not like north America where everybody speaks English (except Québec ) and it's allmost all the same. (apart from regional settings)
Even though you've got "free passage" within Europe. (actually, within the EU)

't Is dat ik in de (Belgische) WW zit, anders had ik de helft wel willen bijdragen. Maar van €47/2 = €23,50 vind ik nog wel veel! (zeker voor 'n retourtje)

The alternative is more complicated. Almere-Tilburg. Tilburg-Turnhout (bus). Turnhout-Genk, but you'd have to change in Lier and Hasselt. And be too late.

Apparently it's cheaper to buy a ticket to Liège from Almere, than to Maastricht!
