Peace, I reckon. You're so far away from the rest of us. It's like 68hrs by train to get to Helsinki.

Especially when so many people here still seem to think it's not good to even smile to strangers and talking to strangers is just weird

You're lucky to have it. I've never seen them - though I tried once. Took a spontaneous trip to Tennessee (the state just north of me).

And when I say spontaneous, I mean I saw on the news that they'd been sighted not far from here, told my friend who was with me at the time, and we were off 10mins later.

Alright. I have a credit card, a few misc. identification cards, a student ID....

I need new ID or new passport and I can't decide which one to get. Passport could be used for travelling to other places but ID would be so much smaller and should work when travelling to Germany.

Anyone know if there might be some problems if I only have ID and no passport at all or passport with my old last name?

Would have hated myself if I'd known they were close and didn't take the chance, though. Seeing the auroras is basically #1 on the list of things I want to do before I die.

Figured. I know Helsinki isn't far enough north to see them too often, but I'd imagine most Finns have seen them at least once in their (adult) life.

If Finland is part of the EU, and it is, you have enough with a Finnish ID card to travel within the Schengen countries. Such as Belgium, Netherlands and Germany. And most times they're cheaper as well.

I don't know what you pay, but I pay €55 for a passport, €50 for a DUTCH ID, and €10 for a Belgian one. (I'm an exile)

Passport valid for 5 years = 54€ (bigger)

I got my maiden name back about year ago so I don't really have any valid ID atm (haven't had problems but then again I've only been in Finland and Sweden). ID is smaller so it would be easier to keep with me.

I don't know Finnish law, but I know in NL and BE a girl, married or not, OFFICIALLY keeps her maiden name. Even with the use of the man's name in NL, on her passport her maiden name is ALWAYS mentioned first.

That makes sense on why I got so many odd looks. I got oddly excited over those trams through Helsinki. I had never seen them like that before.

Here your name is what it is meaning I was X, got married and took his name and was Y (X wasn't mentioned anywhere), got rid of him and eventually his name too so I became X again (Y won't be mentioned anywhere).
