Ansichtssache wohl. Zumindest war bei mir der Englischunterricht nie anders als der Lateinunterricht. Mal abgesehn vom Lehrer und der Unterrichtsweise.

it is really different. You don't actually use the language. You're not doing the lessons in Latin. That's a difference already. You learn vocabulary and grammar of course, but you don't have to be able to form sentences, you only translate. You're also allowed to use a dictionary.

The Latin language has some really weird constructions within the sentence. You've just to learn them, but otherwise it's not really different from any other language. You've got a subject, an object and a verb.

well of course but Latin e.g. has cases like German, which English and Dutch don't have. You gotta learn those. And you use the language way differently than others. Since you only translate.

In English class I had to have talks in English, write essays, read and analyse lecture. Do that with Latin

Which Latin book did you guys have? We had the "Ianua Nova" and there were in each chapter a part where you had to translate from German into Latin. And yeah, you can't speak it, that's right. And in 11th grade we were first allowed to use a dictionary before that we had to know all the vocabulary.

Well, yeah that's true as well. Maybe being linked so close to the German grammar - especially with the cases - makes it easy to learn it. At least for me. Might be something completely different to learn it when you're an English native speaker.

We had the Felix. And later on some short stories copied by our teacher. But we only translated from Latin to German. No need to use the language the other way round. Or we had to mark out certain grammar. But that was it.

Quark is doing German since I think 13 years now and he still doesn't get the difference between Dativ and Akkusativ
