IMO Lamb of God and Chimaira are two modern metal bands that are actually very good. And I would not label either as Metal Core.

though that seems to be just as bad to some

well to me they both have an intensity and brutality factor that exceeds metalcore and they don't have those annoying (to me) metal core vocals, plus they actually incorporate solos into their music. But yeah, modern American metal sounds right.

And I think that Chimaira have a great talent for writing some killer riffs, there's a hint of Slayer in there.
