my dad is a football fanatic, well he used to be. He still loves it but he's not as fanatical as he was.

I agree, I just think that Metalcore bands took the Melodic Death style of bands like In Flames, Soilwork etc. and made a new sound, Metalcore. Then In Flames incorporated some Metalcore sound into their later music. So I think that In Flames took a new sound/subgenre that their music helped influence and applied it back to themselves. I hope that makes sense.
