    Hi,

i`m new to metal, listening to bands like Nightwish for years, but never got into the harder stuff, until i discovered After Forever recently, which blew me away, especially with their heaviest (last) album. Sadly they went apart. Right now i`m listening to Epicas last album (Design your Universe), which draw my attention because it`s heavyness in combination with the complex and great songwriting.

Now i`m searching for new bands to even get deeper into the field, but i`m feeling kind of lost in the wilderness of metal bands out there.
I´m searching for a band which has somehow the same heavy fast style like Epicas song "Semblance of Liberty" and it`s great lyrics. It would be good if it was a female fronted band, but it needn`t to be. It also needn`t to have gothic style, either.

You shouldn't have expected too many serious answers here. :D

Try some power metal bands... Sonata Arctica, Stratovarius, etc. Just search around the internet and you'll find some. Also look into melodeath like Children of Bodom, Amorphis, and Dark Tranquility. A lot of them have harsher vocals but a more melodic sound. Bodom was what helped me get into the heavier stuff, and I also started getting into metal from power metal along with metalcore.

Yeah jumping straight from Epica to ugly bestial black/death isn't a great idea (that will come with time :D) but I'm pretty sure they're just trolling you.

If you're looking for stuff with those sort of beauty and the beast vocals, try Dismal Euphony. They're similar to After Forever. It's been a while since I'vesince I've listened to that style but I remember quite liking Theatre of Tragedy and Sins of Thy Beloved.

If you want the next step up then Cradle of Filth is perfect. They're a great middle man between that sort of symphonic gothic metal and black metal. Their best stuff can be found on Cruelty and the Beast and Dusk and Her Embrace, but your best bet might be starting with Midian or even Nymphetamine. They're playing this year so that would make a good opportunity.

Another popular one is Dimmu Borgir. Start with Death Cult Armageddon and work your way backwards. Their new stuff is pretty fun too. Also, Opeth and Agalloch are rather popular and would probably make good builing blocks. Personally I think they both suck but lots of people like them and they're not too difficult listening.

As xforeverxmetalx said, power metal is worth checking out, especially if you like Nightwish. It's easy on the ears but fun and still very metal. I'm sure you're familiar with Dragonforce so next try Rhapsody/Rhapsody of Fire (playing this year), Sonata Arctica, Helloween and Blind Guardian (playing this year).

The best part of getting into metal is exploring yourself and developing your own tastes, so don't be scared of checking out some random shit or listening to stuff that no many people like.

Don't worry, you'll be listening to Deiphago and Archgoat in no time. ;)

Mostly agreeing here. Search for Power metal, Opera metal (female vocals), and maybe Progressive metal. That should be of your type

When I was very young, I kinda started out with the same stuff as you and when I was kinda young, I had somewhat grown into bands like Demons&Wizards, Dream Theater, Ayreon, Iced Earth and Rhapsody. Also you should give Kamelot's "Ghost Opera" a try, it'll blow you away ;)
Apart from that, maybe you'd like some folk too? Seems fitting to me. Maybe you shouldn't start out with the louder stuff, but e.g. German folk like Schandmaul or Letzte Instanz might suit you (unbelievable, but it belongs to the metal area :D )

From there it's only a small step to Pagan and then you won't be far from liking e.g. Amon Amarth :D

Btw. why don't you just keep hanging around the forum for a while? You'll get into more propositions this way. Just take a peek to the 175k thread when you got time. It's the busiest part ;)

Thanks to ALL of your answers, even those which weren`t meant seriously (I laughed alot:D).

Well believe me or not 2 Years ago i listened psychedelic Rock from the sixties and before that i was 80s hard Rock corner (ACDC and others).
I remembered to have liked Nighwish back i went to school, so i tried to widen my musical horizon last summer, beyond that i never touched metal.
Few month ago i would have never thought i would like something like "semblance of liberty" from Epica, now i feel that i`m ready for the next step.^^
Sadly Everybody i know is into that crappy Hip Hop Music, I have to vomit when i hear it.:D

The little that I have listened to Nightwish and Evanescence I usually have a hard time telling them apart, try:
    http://www.evanescence.com/

For good (as of for me) female vocals, but perhaps harder than what you're looking for, try:
    http://www.archenemy.net/
However Angela only joined the band in 2001 or so, the first albums won't have her singing that is.

As what Sipy said, Amon Amarth is not far away, though it's a dude singing, it's awesome music (nah, thery're not my favourite band or so and I haven't seen them live way more than 20 times...)
Web page is being updated for teh new record:
    http://www.amonamarth.com/
but of course some music and vidoes will be available on myspace:
    http://www.myspace.com/amonamarth
