In the meantime, got my new laptop. 
Love this thing.
I think it wanted me to do a clean install of Windows, as it came with a disk containing all the drivers and the manufacturer's software. Made it really easy even though I haven't ever done it before.
And now I have a great laptop that has the best chance of lasting ages. With a working keyboard.

Right now it's copying all my music from the old laptop to this one. It's about 60% done with 6hrs to go.

Plus I'm selling the old laptop to my friend after I ship it in to get fixed. Going to get $200-250 out of it. That worked out for both of us - she needed something cheap (but not crappy) to replace her completely nonworking laptop while she saved up enough to get a decent one.
And between my discounts and that money, I'm basically only paying $350 for a $700 laptop that's everything I needed it to be - reasonably powerful yet extremely portable. Not bad if you ask me.
