When I first bought this album I thought it was terrible!! It sounded like Metallica had tried to become a "Noo Metal" hybrid, not that I dislike Noo Metal, but I think that trying to change music style can be very dangerous for an old established act. But I have given it further listens and rather than consign it to the trash bin i have kept playing it and it has grown on me! This album is lyricaly brilliant! the title track St Anger and Unseen Kid Paint livid pictures in your brain and a lot of fans will be able to identify with them, the music is cleverly contrived to give the Noo Metal feel in some places but on further listening Metallica have not lost their roots. BRILLIANT!
