Thanks for all the really cool help. I probably will bring my tent that I used to use when I camped here in Georgia and find a store to buy a sleeping bag and other camping essentials. My buddy will have to start from scratch I guess, he can get a pup tent for himself. I will go to that camping only section thats close to the festival grounds. Was thinking of staying in Itzehoe on Tuesday into wednesday to get an early start to Wacken and get a good spot to pitch the tents.

Early? Like...anything before Saturday is early - and I mean the Saturday before the festival. Officially the campground opens on Wednesday but many people arrive much earlier. Which causes lots of problems and is one reason why the festival is getting more and more expensive.

But if it's just you two and your tents you'll probably find a decent spot anyway. Even when you arrive on Wednesday.

I meant early as in getting there around 12:00 on Wednesday. I would rather be in that section on the map that is camping only which I am assuming means no cars. That area seems pretty close to the fest area.

Well, you cannot always choose where to camp, but if you arrive there without a car they ought to direct you exactly to that area. If there's still some space left for you. Which is not certain because many people - as I said - come much earlier than the official opening time so that the campgrounds tend to be quite full even before Wednesday. But I guess your plan should be fine. :)

OK this will be my second WOA, first was in 2003 and stayed in a rental unit on the outskirts of Itzehoe. My German buddy picked me up from the airport in Hamburg and drove us to the place we stayed at and to and from the festival each day. This time he wont be able to attend and I will be attending with my Nephew. We plan to Fly into Luxembourg, then stay one night with a friend in Trier. The next day from there, take the train to Wacken. Anyne have any idea how long the train ride might take from the vacinity of Trier to Itzeheo/Wacken? Does the "Metal Train" run through that area? We should arrive at Wacken in the afternoon on Wednesday and look for a place to camp. Will there be any problem finding a place to pitch our tent at that point? We prefer to camp in one of the tent only areas. How do you find your way bacck to the camp area at 2:00am in the dark? Anyway it will be a blast! See you all there! \m/

For normal train schedules (after Dec. 9!!!) www.bahn.de (also available in English) Nearest train station is Itzehoe, but you already figured that out.

www.metal-train.de for the metal train. I don't know if it passes through Trief Hbf, but I think it didn't last year.

And if you take the shuttle, you should end up at the "tent only" area, at least if you go on Wednesday. For other days, no idea!

There's a thread somewhere about purchasing tents.

Port-a-potties are free, more or less disgusting.

Pay toilets with running water, more or less guaranteed to be clean and have paper, you pay half a euro.

Bring your own TP, you won't regret it.

Edit:

Did a small search, take a look here for tent issues:

well, I didn't bring a flash light my first year, so remember that one...

Also walk the distance in the light of day when "sober" a few times so you'll get your bearings.

And if possible, don't get shit faced and then try to find your tent in the dark, you might fall into one of the most disgustings ditches available...
